WHAT IS A GOOD PHOTO?

In this quarter we will be pursuing the question, "What makes a good photo?" We will look at some famous photographers and their images as well as work on some advanced techniques in compositing and lighting.

WARM-UPS

For warm-ups this quarter we will be looking at work form the top 30 most famous photographers of all time. These photographers changed how the world perceived photography as an art form and means of expression. Many times these photographers challenge the very meaning of art and and what a photograph IS. For each image analyze the TECHNICAL, CREATIVE, AND IDEA  of each image.

If you picked up an old camera without a light meter inside, would you be able to use it? In this project we will look at how to calculate light without a light meter, calculating exposure compensation, and finally taking manual photos.

Artist Study:

Henri Cartier-Bresson

For this project you will create one copycat and one inspiration for the artist. As a class we will look at the style and technique of the artist and how we can use those techniques to improve our own photography. We will have a class critique of the copycat and inspo.

HISTORY OF THE CAMERA

In this assignment you will be looking over the history of the camera, how did the first cameras come to be? How has the camera developed in the last ten, twenty, hundred years. Who were the big names in photography that helped make it a worldwide phenomenon? 

VIDEO AND VOCAB TEST

Composition On A STRING

For this project you will identify at least ten composition techniques and find images of that technique in action on Google Images. You will print out the images and label them on index cards, then put them on a string.

Senior Portraits

For this project you will be taking ten senior portraits using outdoor flash techniques. You will need to find suitable locations in the harsh sun, then using your knowledge of exposure equivalents adjust your exposure for the background. Finally you will use the outdoor wireless strobes to light your subject. 

The E & P

For this project you will create one high quality image using each of the elements and principles of art. Photos should be creative, subject focused, and use at least one of the composition techniques in your composition on a string. Label each photo with the E or P and the composition technique you are using.

Artist Study:

Yousuf Karsh 

For this project you will create two images in the style, lighting, and spirit of Karsh. The first picture will be of me, Mr. Johnson. The second will be of any adult that is not family. Portraits can be intimidating and that is the point. Master your lighting, positioning, and posing to successfully complete this picture.

The Principles

For this project you will create one high quality image using each of the principles of art. Photos should be creative, subject focused, and use at least one of the composition techniques in your composition on a string. Label each photo with the  P and the composition technique you are using.
