HOW DO I CORRECTLY USE FLASH?

Photo II will be focused on the use and manipulation of light, both studio and natural to create well lit and dynamic photos! This semester you will not turn in a single photo without some use of artificial light or light modifier!

WARM-UPS

For warm-ups this quarter we will be looking at work form the top 30 most famous photographers of all time. These photographers changed how the world perceived photography as an art form and means of expression. Many times these photographers challenge the very meaning of art and and what a photograph IS. For each image analyze the TECHNICAL, CREATIVE, AND IDEA  of each image.

STUDIO TRACK

STUDIO OBJECT STUDY

For this photo essay you will need to find 10 "boring" things and using studio lighting and the techniques you learn this quarter make them interesting in the studio. Each object should have its own unique feel and lighting. I DO NOT want to see all the objects in high contrast black in white. Experiment with color, different backgrounds, and gels!

Portrait Cheat Sheet

For this activity you will be making a cheat sheet for posing. Coming up with ideas on how to pose your subject is hard! Create a slideshow, google docs, or other document that has 30 female poses (15 indoor/ 15 outdoor) and 30 male poses (15 indoor/ 15 outdoor). We will print this out so that you can have a reference when you begin to take indoor and outdoor portraits.

STUDIO VOCAB

For this assignment you will be taking notes on the various terms used in the studio: monolight, transmitter, speedlight, diffuser, etc. You will create a set of flashcards to help you study. The final part will be to complete a non-multiple choice test!

FLASH VOCAB

Six Basic Lighting STYLES

This assignment you will need to copy and master the six basic lighting set-ups - Rembrandt, Split, Loop, Butterfly, Broad, Short. Images need to be correctly exposed and feature good use of light. You can either make them more dramatic by focusing on contrast, or use a fill card to soften each look.

Single Light SET-Up

For this assignment you will be experimenting with a single studio strobe. How can you create unique and interesting compositions with a single light? Take three images in different positions.

NAtural Light

For this assignment you will be using natural light for creative effects. You will be using a mirror, a window, and shadows creatively.

-Window Light

-Natural Cast Shadows

-Reflections (Water, Mirror, Window)

HIGH KEY

For this assignment you will be taking high key portraits on a white background. Use lots of light without washing out your subject, remember the six lighting styles ! Take 3 high key pictures.

Bounce Flash

For this assignment you will be using a speedlight mounted on the top of your camera. You will need to keep your subject in the same spot and use the walls, ceiling, and reflectors to control the light.

Low KEY

For this assignment you will be taking low key portraits on a black or grey background. Use minimum light without making your subject too dark, remember the six lighting styles ! Take 3 low key pictures.

DRamatic Outdoor

In this advanced project you will balance artificial lighting with natural light. For this assignment I want you to underexpose the image and balance that out with a portable moonlight. This will give a dramatic portrait effect.

Color Gels

For this assignment you will using color gels for creative effect. In the studio you will be clipping the gel to a strobe, they are large squares. Outside you will be using speedlights with color gels on the top. Take three color gel photos in creative ways!
